Pittsburgh: A City Transformed

Within the past year, Pittsburgh has been named both the “Greenest City in America” and “America’s Most Livable City.” Once dubbed “Hell with the Lid Off,” the Smoky City has reinvented itself as a leader in higher education, technology and medicine. Today more than 800 firms make up Pittsburgh’s advanced technology industries. The city's transformation from Rust Belt to Green Belt has earned it the honor of hosting Body and Soul: Parks and the Health of Great Cities.

Almost 10 million people visit the Pittsburgh region each year. Many of them are attracted by the city’s sports empire: football with the Steelers, major league baseball with the Pirates and hockey with the Penguins. The sparkling Three Rivers (Ohio, Monongahela and Allegheny) define the city’s picturesque landscape. And Pittsburgh’s many internationally acclaimed science and art museums provide stimulating exercise for the mind.
